Understand GPS location accuracy

A phone estimates its position from several signals, including GNSS satellites, Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Accuracy changes with the environment and the device.

What affects accuracy

  • Clear sky usually improves satellite reception.
  • Tall buildings can reflect satellite signals and move the reported position.
  • Indoor areas, tunnels and metal structures can reduce or block GNSS reception.
  • A device that has just been restarted or moved a long distance may need more time to establish a good position.

Improve a field reading

  • Move to an open area where practical.
  • Wait briefly for the reported position to settle before capturing a location-critical photo.
  • Check whether precise location is enabled in the phone settings.

Use the right tool
