Understand GPS location accuracy
A phone estimates its position from several signals, including GNSS satellites, Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Accuracy changes with the environment and the device.
What affects accuracy
- Clear sky usually improves satellite reception.
- Tall buildings can reflect satellite signals and move the reported position.
- Indoor areas, tunnels and metal structures can reduce or block GNSS reception.
- A device that has just been restarted or moved a long distance may need more time to establish a good position.
Improve a field reading
- Move to an open area where practical.
- Wait briefly for the reported position to settle before capturing a location-critical photo.
- Check whether precise location is enabled in the phone settings.
